Jobs in physics

IUPAP Corporate Associate Members can post jobs in physics on the Inspire platform, a portal that is mainly oriented towards communities in high energy physics, nuclear physics, accelerator physics and astrophysics, but also offer a general physics category.

There is work in progress to make a special integration of LinkedIn to feature resumes of particular interest to companies planning to hire physicists.

Other resources for international career preparation and recruitment

United States

APS: Careers in physics

The American Physical Society (APS) has developed a set of resources that include a guide for preparing for and finding a job in the private sector, a guide describing career opportunities available in industry and national labs, possible career options and paths describing what the job entails along with needed education and background. The site profiles of over 50 physicists in various sectors, and physics career slideshows.

Joint Task Force on Undergraduate Physics Programs

A joint effort of APS and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), the Phys21: Preparing Physics Students for 21st Century Careers report provides guidance for physicists considering revising the undergraduate curriculum to improve the education of a diverse student population. The report includes recommendations on content, pedagogy, professional skills, and student engagement and documentable student outcomes.  The J-TUPP Summary of Background Reports on Careers and Professional Skills provides a summary of background reports on careers and professional skills in all the STEM disciplines.

AIP Career Pathways Project

Developed by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the Career Pathways Project includes a Careers Toolbox for Undergraduate Physics Students that is a set of tools and exercises designed to help undergraduate physics students prepare to enter the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, a report for faculty recommending specific activities to prepare their majors for the STEM workforce, a brief fact sheet that includes information on the common career paths of physics bachelor’s recipients, resume and career advising tips, suggested databases for finding physics-related internships and jobs, and more, and a career options poster that summarizes alternative education and career paths to the traditional academia or research options that physics majors should be aware of.

EPIC: Educating Physicists for Impactful Careers

The Educating Physicists for Impactful Careers (EPIC) report is a product of the PIPELINE project, a three-year project bringing together the efforts of seven institutions to create a document that describes new approaches to teaching innovation and entrepreneurship in physics.  It includes 10 examples of how to incorporate innovation in the undergraduate physics curriculum.

Canada

Careers for Physics Graduates

The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) careers site includes information on the wide range of challenging careers open to people who study physics, including videos of physicists in different careers, career posters, how to become a physicist, what physicists do at work, and employment prospects.

Europe

Optica: From PhD to CEO—Making an exciting leap into business

In this webinar series, young European entrepreneurs share their stories of how they moved from the lab to the executive office. This series is a joint initiative of Optica and the European Physical Society (EPS) EPS Young Minds Program. Its objective is to foster innovation and entrepreneurship amongst young physicists and provide insights into the European start-up culture.

IOP: Your future with physics—A guide for young people

The Institute of Physics (IOP) careers site describes what sorts of jobs physics can lead to, academic and vocationalpaths to a career in physics, physics apprenticeships, and descriptions of many career paths for those in the U.K. and Ireland.
